Deputy Collector, Margao Uday Prabhudesai on Tuesday has called upon PHC Health Officers to ensure the immediate formation of the Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committee (VHSNC) to control the spread of vector borne diseases in their jurisdiction.  

He also told the BDO’s to ensure that the village panchayats of Salcete taluka set up the Garbage Management Committee & Village Water and Sanitation Committees to bolster the battle against dengue & malaria.  

The Deputy Collector was chairing the meeting of the Salcete Block Committee to control vector borne diseases held on Thursday at the South Goa Collectorate, Margao. The formation of the three committees was highlighted by Martin Rodrigues, Consumer Forum representative on the Block Committee, when he pointed out that community participation was crucial in the fight against dengue & malaria and to save lives from these vector borne diseases.

He pointed out that the Garbage Management Committee has to be formed as per The Goa Non-biodegradable Garbage Act 1996 and Rules 1997, while the Village Water and Sanitation Committee has to be also set up as per Circular dated 9 February 2009 and subsequent Circulars issued by the Principal Chief Engineer (PCE) wherein the Junior Engineer (PWD) is the Member Secretary of the Committee.

The Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committee (VHSNC) formation is the responsibility of the PHC under the new directives from Government of India and DHS Goa.
