MARGAO

Parish Youth, Nuvem edge past Ambelim Sports Club 2-1 to march into the semi-finals of South Goa McDowell’s No 1 Yaari Cup inter village football tournament, organised by Cuncolim Union, in a thrilling quarter-final played at Government Village School ground, Cuncolim on Tuesday. The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.

Parish Youth dominated the proceedings initially and enjoyed better ball possession and they rocked the rival citadel in the 11th minute when Inacio Colaco’s powerful shot off a well measured cross from Bevan Colaco beat the rival goalkeeper Benny Silva. Stung by the early reversal, Ambelim Sports Club fought hard but their moves yielded no results. However persistent forays paid off when Parryson Fernandes floated a flag kick and striker Samson Simoes nicely headed home to put his team on equal terms in the 26th minute.

After levelling the score, the teams had equal number of scoring chances but their forwards squandered chances from close. Crossing over, both sides continued to create chances but were unlucky with their finishing in the initial period of the game as Parish Youth forwards continued to attack the rival citadel but their forwards frittered away from

close range.

Parish Youth scored the winning goal in the 53rd minute when attacking midfielder Jerose Olveira’s blistering shot beat the rival goalkeeper Benny Silva. With time running out, Ambelim Sports Club went all out in search of equaliser and in the dying minutes striker Samson Simoes missed a sitter.

St Anthony’s advance

St Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna-Siolim registered a fluent 3-0 win over hosts Saligao United 3-0 to storm into the semi-finals of North Goa McDowell’s No 1 Yaari Cup inter village football tournament, organised by Saligao United at Duler ground, Mapusa on Tuesday.

After a goalless first half, substitute Puspharaj found luck in front of the goal in the 41st minute when he picked up the ball from Sidnanath and sent a good effort past the rival goalkeeper. Spurred on by the success, St Anthony’s upped the ante and Siddanath doubled the lead when he beat the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish. At the other end, Saligao United were woeful and hardly tested the rival goalkeepeer. In the 70th minute, Dalesh fired the third goal to cap a comprehensive win for St Anthony’s.
