Students, social groups offer paper, cloth bags to Mormugao civic body for plastic-free Saptah

VASCO: As part of their efforts to promote a plastic-free Saptah, students and social clubs offered paper and cloth bags to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) during the Damodar Bhajani Saptah Fair to be held from August 16.

The MMC now has about 20,000 paper bags from various schools and has also purchased 4,000 bags.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that the Mission Plastic Free Saptah had the theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution” this year. As part of this plan, the MMC had plans to distribute paper bags to all stalls.

“In a bid to make Vasco plastic-free, appropriate steps were taken and alternatives were also given to all traders by distributing free paper and cloth bags.”

“All schools were entrusted the task of preparing paper bags from the “wealth out of waste” project given to them. As of now, we have procured about 20,000 paper bags from all schools and also purchased 4,000 bags from an agency for free distribution,” said Fernandes.

“The Giants Group of Vasco and Rotaract Club of Vasco have also joined hands to make Vasco plastic-free. Both clubs will also distribute paper bags free of cost to every vendor during the Saptah,” said Fernandes.
