The Goa government has no details available of cases where immovable properties of non-resident Goans which have been fraudulently transacted, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

In a written reply, Parrikar told Velim MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues, that some NRIs have submitted details of their properties in Goa to the NRI Cell and this information has been passed on to the District Collectors and the State Registrar and Head of Notary Services so as to prevent fraudulent transactions of these properties, Parrikar said.

Thirteen NRIs from Bardez, one from Ponda, three from Salcete and two from Mormugao have registered the details of their properties with the NRI Cell, Parrikar added.

Interestingly, the Chief Minister has gone on record that no cases of fraudulent transactions of property belonging to NRI Goans is available with the government.

Some 2-3 years ago, Germany-based ex-India hockey captain, Dr Otilia Mascarenhas and her brother had raised the issue of their property fraudulently being sold by impersonating their long dead uncle who had bequeathed the property to them.

The fraud was committed apparently by a real estate cartel operating in the Porvorim area.

Dr Mascarenhas had taken up the issue then with

Parrikar himself, who reportedly intervened to restore

possession.

The criminal cases in the matter are reportedly still pending prosecution.
