Holy Spirit Institute-Margao, scored a fluent 3-0 win against Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School-Verna and emerged champions of Salcete taluka Under-17 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs (DSYA) at SAG artificial turf ground, Fatorda, here on Wednesday.
Right from the start, the Holy Spirit Institue lads from GFDC Academy, showed their attacking intent. At the other end, Fr Agnel were meticulous in their approach, but did not pack enough punch in search of goals. They got their first opportunity in the 12th minute but Alloid Colaco’s snap-shot was thwarted by rival defender Anish Gadkar.
Holy Spirit Institute took the lead in the 15th minute when Clarence Fernandes’ glancing header was beautifully connected off Harish Patre’s free-kick. Holy Spirit doubled the lead in the 22nd minute when Vellington Fernandes’ downward header eluded the rival goalkeeper to make it 2-0. After taking a healthy lead, Holy Spirit Institute enjoyed total domination with strikers Clarence Fernandes and Vellington Fernandes looked sharp as their pacy runs kept the rival defenders on tenterhooks.
Fr Agnel were getting frustrated as Holy Spirit Institute refused to take their foot off the pedal after the change of ends. They however had a chance to reduce the deficit when Shawn D’Silva’s rasping shot was thwarted by the rival defender with a neat tackle. At the other end, Mevan Dias stamped his class when he delicately passed the rival goalkeeper in the 36th minute to make it 3-0 for Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit Institute had couple of more scoring chances but their forwards muffed gilt-edged opportunities.
Gurudas Vernekar, DSYA Assistant Director, Mahesh Revonkar, APEO Salcete taluka, Anthony Pango, GFA Executive Member, Aleixo Da Costa, Member-Secretary GFDC, and Manthan Adpaikar, TSO Salcete taluka, were present for the final.
