Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said around 8,000 jobs will be created and filled by December this year through direct government recruitment, entrepreneurial opportunities thrown up by the initiatives of the Information Technology Policy and other industry and self-employment through the Chief Minister’s Rojgar Yojna (CMRY) scheme.

“I expect the IT Policy to generate 2000 jobs per year at least in the initial 2-3 years,” Parrikar said, adding that other industries coming in through the Investment Promotion Board will make an equivalent number of placements.

The CMRY scheme gives gainful employment to 3000-odd Goan youth and the government sector will recruit around 800, Parrikar said. All this will add up to around 8000 gainful employment by the end of this year, the chief minister said.

Parrikar was speaking after he inaugurated the Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) incubation centre and co-working space ‘IGNITE-EDC Innovation Hub’. Information Technology Minister, Rohan Khaunte, EDC chairman Siddharth Kunkoliencar, IT Secretary Amey Abhiyankar besides the top brass of the EDC including its Board of Directors graced the inaugural function.

Parrikar congratulated the EDC for setting up the incubation centre and announced that the IT department has pledged to ensure its 100-percent utilization through the companies and entities that they are currently negotiating and signing MOUs with.  8000 jobs up for grabs

“The IT sector is a very important part of the government’s push for job creation,” Parrikar said, adding that though technology is responsible for run-of-the-mill clerical and other job losses, it also has potential to create many more skilled jobs for tech upgrade, maintenance of the systems and networking.

The website of the innovation hub www.edcignite.com was also launched through which interested start-ups -- including in IT, finance, bio-medical or any any other field provided its an idea for an innovative product or service -- can now apply for incubation online.

Housed on the fourth floor of the EDC House in Panaji, the innovation hub is a 5000 square feet work space that can seat 78 people in ready private offices, individual desks and meeting rooms. The hub guarantees high bandwidth internet connectivity, 24x7 power supply and high security features incorporated in the network.

The incubator will also have a growing ecosystem comprising a network of mentors, funding sources, service providers and industry connects.
