It was 7 am on Thursday, around three hours after the FDA raided Goa’s lone wholesale fish market that senior FDA official Iva Fernandes told the media that the qualitative test conducted on fish sold at the market has tested positive for formalin.

There was no ambiguity when Iva made the statement to the media, saying the test for formalin has tested positive because the colour of the solution has changed. “The qualitative spot test has tested positive. We have directed the owners of the trucks transporting fish not to dispose of the fish without further orders,” Iva said, before she along with her staff, including the chemist left the wholesale fish market to proceed to the head office.

The FDA team had descended in the wholesale fish market before dawn, around 4 am to be precise. “We have come to test the fish over media reports which spoke about fish not being safe for consumption since formalin is added to the fish before being sold to the local people,” she said.

The FDA team had spotted around 17 vehicles at the wholesale fish market, which had brought fish to the market
