Be prepared to find the Dabolim International airport renamed after Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Rajmata Jijabai, Swami Vivekananda, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam or even, Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar, if a proposal by the Mormugao Yuva Morcha (MYM) is considered.

The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) has written to the Flag Officer Commanding HQ Goa Naval area and Airport Director of Dabolim International Airport regarding suggestions by MYM.

The DCA was responding to a petition by MYM Convenor Kiran Naik to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that Goa International Airport be renamed after a famous personality who had contributed to benefit of the state or country.

In his letter to the PM, Naik had stated that while many airports across the country were named after eminent personalities who had contributed to the state or nation, the Goa airport had been unnamed.

Naik had suggested that the Goa Airport be named after a legend who had contributed at the highest level in the service of the nation or Goa.

Naik had suggested the names of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Rajmata Jijabai, Swami Vivekananda, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam or Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar as possible names for the Goa airport.

According to Naik, while airports in other states had their airports named after eminent personalities, Goa was the only state where its airport had remained unnamed.
