Guirdolim robbery brings to fore tenant verification

MARGAO

Renting out rooms to migrants without tenant verification have come to the fore following the daring Guirdolim robbery, even as reports indicate that the main accused in the case had stayed in the rooms leased out by the victim Joaquim Estibeiro.

In fact, district police chief, SP Arvind Gawas, told The Goan that the main accused has confessed that he had done a recce of the house of the senior citizens when he had stayed in the rented rooms leased out by the victims. “The main accused has told the police that he had stayed for four months in the rented rooms leased out by the victims in their property adjoining the house. During this period, the accused carried out a recce of the house and it helped him to enter the house by removing the roof tiles,” SP Gawas said.

The police are also investigating whether the occupants, who were putting up in the rented rooms, had a shady past, including the women who were often found at the Margao station road. What’s interesting to note is that the victim Joaquim conceded that he could not complete the verification exercise of his tenants, staying in his rented rooms. “I had taken the details from the tenants putting up in the rented rooms, but these were not handed over to the police,” Joaquim said.

Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias said that tenant verification is a must given that the house is situated close to the railway tracks, where people and come ago.
