The Betalbatim gram sabha on Sunday resolved to issue identity cards to migrants staying in the village and also discussed on the law and order situation in the backdrop of the gang rape on the Sunset beach and the murder of a Colva resident at the adjoining Lover’s beach.

The meeting chaired by Sarpanch Constancio Miranda also adopted a resolution to carry out an awareness programme for the higher secondary and high school students on the safety and security aspects in the light of the recent incidents.

When the gang rape case, besides the issue of migrants came up for discussion, the Sarpanch explained steps initiated by the Panchayat body by submitting a detailed memorandum to the district Collector, South along with Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa and ZP member Nelly Rodrigues.

He pointed out that since the police did not send a copy of the verification of the migrants to the Panchayat body, Sarpanch Miranda said the Panchayat has now requested the Colva police to send one copy of the verification to the Panchayat body for action. “Based on the police verification copy, the panchayat will issue identity cards to the migrants with information such as the name, native address and the address of the landlord.
