With the advancement of the monsoon causing havoc in Mangalore and Udupi taking the lives of as many of three people, besides causing widespread flooding, Goa is on alert that it could receive a similar bout of nine-hours continuous rainfall leaving the state reeling when the monsoon does arrive.

The monsoon could advance into Goa within the next four days the Meteorological Department has forecast after the monsoon advanced rapidly into most of coastal Karnataka and is only a few days away.

The Met department has reported that the east west shear zone along Lat. 12°N between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level over Indian Region persists which could lead to heavy rains across the West Coast of India.

The Northern limit of the Monsoon along the west coast of India currently lies at Shirali (Bhatkal). Goa should be prepared for rains similar to that witnessed in Mangalore where three persons succumbed and thousands of others were left stranded after nine hours of continuous rain left the city and surrounding areas inundated.  “Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some parts of northeastern states during next 48 hours. Conditions are likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of south Peninsula from around 3rd June, with the likely development of favourable circulation features leading to increasing of rainfall over interior Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana,” the Met Department forecast.

The monsoon arrived in Kerala well ahead of schedule and has caused heavy rains along the Malabar coast with reports of three persons succumbing to the heavy rains and consequent flooding that ‘unexpectedly’ struck the coastal city.

“Rainfall activity is likely to increase over parts of Maharashtra & Goa from June 6 leading to probable advanced of southwest monsoon over this area 6th to 8th June,” the Department has said.

However, with the monsoon having arrived early in Kerala, it is very likely that they will reach Goa ahead of schedule.
