Government’s circular on barring discussion on issues not listed on the agenda during a gram sabha came in for strong opposition at Varca panchayat on Sunday.

The gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Roland Fernandes saw gram sabha members questioning the rationale behind the government’s decision to ban any other matter not listed on the agenda.

Members demanded to know how the villagers are supposed to raise matters of urgent public interest, while demanding that the government withdraw the circular.

The meeting also discussed at length the power situation in the village with agitated members coming down heavily on the power department as well as the contractor for not maintaining the street lights.

Saprnach Roland Fernandes also pointed out that may roads in the village have been facing problem of illumination with the contractor not maintaining the street lights.

The issue of construction of drains along with the main Varca road before the onset of monsoon was discussed at the meeting.
