Drishti Lifesaving has cautioned beachgoers and tourists not to venture into the sea on account of “very severe cyclonic storm Mekunu” brewing in southwest Arabian Sea.

Reacting to Met Department warnings that the cyclone is expected to impact sea conditions along the coast, Drishti has issued an alert valid for the next 72 hours warning of rough sea conditions and high winds creating the possibility of a surge of waves during the high tide, in the low lying areas of the coast.

“The Drishti’s team of lifeguards present along the coast are monitoring the surroundings. The team is trained to carry out rescues even in rough weather,” the agency said in a statement.

Meanwhile the Met department has upgraded the cyclone “Mekenu” from a “very severe cyclonic storm” to an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” which is expected to make landfall within the next 24-hours along the Oman Yemen Coast with wind speeds of 60-170 kmph gusting to 190 kmph between 53 deg E and 55 deg E close to Salalah, around May 26.

While the system is not expected to affect the Goa-Maharashtra coast, the Met Department has predicted light rain and thundershowers as being likely to occur at a few places over north Goa and south Goa from May 25-28.
