MARGAO:  The Benaulim gram sabha on Sunday took strong exception to the raw sewage flowing into the river Sal and contaminating the water body, as members demanded that the Panchayat write letters to the Margao Municipal Council to plug the flow of sewage through the storm water nullahs.

Some of the gram sabha members also took exception to the draft CRZ notification, seeking to relax the CRZ line to 50 meters from the high tide line.

At the Sunday gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Dielle Fernandes, members called for a stop to the flow of the sewage water from areas such as Fatorda into the river Sal. It was pointed out that while the state of the art sewage treatment plants may have helped to treat the raw sewage, they pointed out that sewage flowing into the rivers through the storm water drains is responsible for contaminating the river.

In this connection, the Panchayat will write letters to the Margao Municipality and other concerned agencies to act and plug the sewage flow in the next four months.

The Panchayat also deliberated on the annual budget as the Panchayat placed a deficit budget of Rs 1.14 crore, with members demanding recovery of outstanding arrears running into lakhs of rupees.

The issue of stray dogs also dominated at the gram sabha. With curtains coming down on the tourism season, gram sabha members demanded action against stray dogs, fearing that the stray dogs may come to the village after the closure of the beach shacks.
