Welcoming any inquiry against him, Goa Dairy Chairman Madhav Sahakari, who faces a no-confidence motion on Thursday, has said efforts to curb corruption in Goa Dairy would help offer better support price to farmers and reduce milk price for purchasers.

Addressing a news conference in the city a day ahead of the meeting to discuss the no-confidence motion, Sahakari lamented that corruption is taking Goa Dairy downhill.

“I had made allegations against the Managing Director (Dr Navasu Sawant) after I had concrete evidence against him. An inquiry should be instituted against him and I

also welcome any inquiry against me through any agency. If I am involved in any scam or corruption, then the agencies are free to punish me,” he said.

Sahakari said the Satyashodhak Samiti of Goa

Dairy had the right to investigate the scams as it was constituted by AGM.

Admitting that it could be his last day as chairman of Goa Dairy as he has made no efforts to win the no-confidence motion, Sahakari added: “I have worked in the better interest of Goa Dairy. I will face whatever is in store for me.”

“I want Goa dairy to run smoothly. Hence on March 14 I had requested the Registrar of Cooperative Societies to inquire into any disputed matters. Those found guilty should be punished,” he said.

Asked if Goa Dairy would be in position to hike the support price of farmers and reduce milk price for purchasers if corruption is stopped, Sahakari replied: “Definitely. Money which is getting diverted for corruption can be utilised for the purpose.”

The Registrar of Cooperative Societies has convened a meeting on April 26 to discuss the no-confidence motion against Sahakari. Eight directors of Goa Dairy on April 11 had moved a no-confidence motion against Sahakari, after he had decided to suspend Managing Director Dr Navasu Sawant. These eight directors supported Dr Sawant and moved a no-confidence motion against Sahakari.

The eight directors -- Vithoba Desai, Aselmo Furtado, Rajesh Fal Desai, Baburao Desai, Rajendra Sawal, Dhananjay Desai, Gurudas Parab and Naresh Malik -- had signed the no-confidence motion stating that they had lost confidence in Sahakari.
