MAPUSA: Six areas in Bardez have been notified to enforce speed limit which will be implemented once PWD erects speed limit boards along the designated places.
“All these six areas come under the jurisdiction of the Mapusa traffic cell. The police will start issuing challan to offenders only once the speed limit boards are appropriately installed at all the six spots,” said Roland Martins, convenor of GOACAN.
The GOACAN convenor was speaking at an awareness action programme conducted by Mapusa Municipal Council Road Safety Traffic Management Committee in collaboration with Mapusa Traffic Police, as part of the National Road Safety Week.
On the occasion, the traffic police conducted a demonstration of the speed radar near the Gandhi Chowk, Mapusa.
Martins explained that the demonstration was basically held so that public and vehicle owners were aware why and how police will stand and monitor the speed radar along the specified routes.
In Bardez, the following six stretches will be monitored for specified speed limit:
The stretch from irrigation department, Carrasvaddo up to Peddem traffic circle the speed limit has been fixed at 40 km per hour while the stretch from Green Park junction to Carrasvaddo junction the limit has been fixed at 60 km per hour.
Similarly, the stretch from Tivim football ground to railway station, Sirsaim the limit has been fixed at 50 km per hour, while the speed limit from St Clara School, Assonora to primary school, Mulgao has been fixed at 40 km per hour.
For the stretch from Binani factory to Colvale Bridge the limit has been fixed at 60 km per hour and the speed limit on Colvale Bridge has been fixed at 40 km per hour.
Martins said that many youngsters drive at high speed even within city limits but now with implementation of speed limit, these youth will be forced to watch for the speed limit boards at different spots.
“I think we will have to carry on with this awareness campaign. We will write to the MMC to install the speed limit boards which come under the municipal area,” he said.
He said the tourists should also be made aware that there are speed restrictions imposed at various stretches in the State.
