The Panchayat Secretary, Clifton Azavedo on Sunday informed the Ucassaim gram sabha that people who dump construction material by the roadside will have to pay a stiff fine.
He said for the convenience of the people the government has designated two places where such construction material can be dumped.
“The panchayat has received a circular from the government stating that construction material dumped at unauthorized places will be treated as offence and if caught the offender will be imposed a stiff fine,” Azavedo said.
He said government has earmarked designated places to dump the construction material.
“Government has allowed dumping of construction material along the road widening at NH17 from Green Park to Carrasvaddo and from Green Park to Guirim,”
 he said.
Raising the issue of festering garbage problem, the secretary said despite collection of dry garbage undertaken by the panchayat, some people continued to dump waste at some open places in the
 village.
“A lot of waste is also dumped in the nullah creating a nuisance in the village. Any person caught dumping waste in open spaces will be penalized with a fine of Rs 5,000 or imprisonment for 15 days,” the secretary said.
The panchayat secretary further observed that a lot of people in the village gave rooms on rent but failed to provide proper toilet facility.
He said four locals have volunteered to conduct a survey in the village to find out how many rooms have been given on rent and how many do not have toilets.
“The exercise is being conducted to find out how many rooms/homes have toilets or not. The information is basically being collated to help in halting open defecation,”
he said.
The secretary also said that many locals released their sewerage water in the open gutters.
“Sewage water cannot be released in the gutters. Gutters are meant for flushing out of rain water,” Azavedo said.
He informed the gram sabha that the panchayat would soon buy a bailing machine to compress dry garbage.
He also said that convex mirrors would be installed at two accident prone spots in the village.
