Popular vocalist Mahesh Kale’s breathtaking vocal notes may have left his audience spellbound on Saturday but the event has ended on a bitter note, with many local artistes questioning the State government’s largesse to the programme.

The government’s decision to hand over Rs 4 lakh from two separate departments to fund Kale’s performance, being organised by a private club, has raised eyebrows, with several persons accusing the government of failing to bestow such generosity on local artistes.

Officials in the Art and Culture Department have revealed that the Art and Culture Department is handing out Rs 4 lakh for the performance that took place at the Kala Academy on Saturday.

“Besides the art and culture department, the tourism department has also agreed to offer a fee by virtue of the fact that it is ‘powering’ the event,” an official told The Goan.

The angst is fuelled by the government’s decision to readily hand over money for performances by Kale and others, while simultaneously denying funds to local artistes to offer them a stage to showcase their talent.

The performance was organised by the Rotary Club of Panaji and was held at on Saturday evening.

“No doubt Kale is a vocalist of acclaim.
