MARGAO

Dempo Sports Club Juniors blanked Goa Velha Sports Club 2-0 in the Geno GFA’s First Division League at SAG Artificial Turf Ground, Fatorda on Saturday.

Coming from back to back defeats, Dempo Sports Club Juniors took time to settle down and once they struck their rhythm they called the shots against the rival citadel.

Dempo made an early breakthrough when striker Baggio Fernandes beat his marker and unleashed a blistering shot which crashed into the net. After taking the lead, Dempo Sports Club Juniors became intimidating in attack but could not add to

their tally.

On the other hand, relegation threatened Goa Velha Sports Club who were desperate to record an elusive win, didn’t show any urgency. Others than Baggio’s goal, the first half didn’t have a lot of action.

Post resumption, Goa Velha Sports Club showed some attacking intent. Winger Nikesh Mangueshkar tried to level scores with a shot on target, however the Dempo goal-keeeper collected the ball with ease.

Goa Velha came close to leveling the score when Pravin Naik who controlled the ball inside the box, made a snap shot on goal but was palmed away by the alert Dempo custodian.

On the other side, Dempo Juniors created plenty of scoring chances and had an opportunity to double their lead when Aaron Alvares’ well-executed free kick narrowly missed the mark.

Dempo Sports Club sealed the fate of the match in the 73rd minute when captain Brivon Dias found unmarked Altroy Rodrigues who tapped it home.

With time running out, Goa Velha Sports Club mounted tremendous pressure on the rival citadel, however Dempo goal-keeper was outstanding under the horizontal to maintain a clean slate backed by a sound back-line.
