Members of the State Congress committee went into a huddle on Friday with Goa desk in-charge All India Congress Committee secretary Dr A Chellakumar inviting all top members of the party including the 16 MLAs for a tête-à-tête in the hope of selecting a new face to lead the party in the State.

Outgoing president Shantaram Naik submitted his resignation to the party high command earlier this week, effectively vacating the top spot for a younger leader. In his last press address, Naik concurred with AICC president Rahul Gandhi’s call to infuse fresh blood into the party’s top rungs.

Upon his arrival in Goa, Dr Chellakumar stated, “New Congress state president will be announced in next 10 days. State leaders have suggested several names. We have stuck to the basic requirements of experience, commitment to the party and a strong will to take on the weak ruling coalition”.

Among the Congress members who met the AICC emissary were former chief minister Francisco Sardinha, Mahila Congress president
