Union Minister for Shipping and Water Resources Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the Centre would contribute Rs 450 crore to the new Mandovi Bridge and Ring Road, which is expected to cost Rs 900 crore.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at Baina, Gadkari said a lot of development was planned for Goa.

“The Centre will provide Rs 400 crore for the completion of the Rs 800 crore Mandovi Bridge. Besides, we have also given an additional Rs 50 crore for the Rs 100 crore Ring Road near the Mandovi Bridge. As such, we have given Rs 450 crore in total for the Mandovi Bridge alone,” added Gadkari.

TRAWLER SCHEME: Gadkari offered a trawler scheme to Goan fishermen, which would allow them to take these trawlers up to 200 nautical miles for a five-fold catch.

Speaking on the benefits for Goan fishermen, Gadkari said that fishing till 11 nautical miles is permitted by the State government.

“But till 200 nautical miles, there is plenty of fish but no fishing activity. The Central government under the Sagarmala scheme has come up with a trawler scheme which is eco-friendly. If Goa fishermen are ready, we are willing to give money for this scheme.”

“These trawlers will go up to 200 nautical miles and they can get five times more fish. All packing and exports can be done from here and this will boost Goa as a fishing hub and fishermen can benefit,” said Gadkari.
