Finally, the trial in the alleged rape case involving former editor-in-chief of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal began in a Mapusa court after more than four years.
The Additional District and Sessions Court recorded the statement of the prosecutrix on Thursday, the first day of the three day in-camera trial in Mapusa.
“Two sessions of the trial were held today (March 15). Examination in chief has been recorded and will continue tomorrow (March 16),” said Public Prosecutor Francisco Tavora, refusing to share further details.
Judge Vijaya Pol presided over the close door trial which began after 10 am with one break for lunch at 1 pm.
The second session began at 2.30 pm and ended at 5 in the evening.
Earlier, the Investigation Officer, Sunita Sawant escorted the prosecutrix to the court room where the trial was conducted in-camera.
Tejpal’s family members who were present in the court room were asked to leave and the proceedings were conducted with only the lawyers, the alleged accused and the prosecutrix.
Tejpal was represented by defense counsel, Shrikant Shivadhe.
It may be recalled, a female colleague had accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her in the elevator of a starred hotel in Goa where Tehelka was hosting a conclave in November, 2013.
Following an FIR, Tejpal was arrested and sent to custody where he remained for nearly a year before being released on bail.
The court has framed charges against the 55-year-old journalist under various sections, including sexual harassment and rape.
Tejpal had denied all allegations against him.
