Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Manohar ‘Babu’ Ajgaonkar, has informed that Rs 230 crore investment will be required to build new sports stadiums and to refurbish the existing sports infrastructure for the upcoming National Games, which are scheduled in Goa from November 4 to 17.
Ajgaonkar provided this information while responding to a question tabled during the ongoing budget session of the Assembly.
Of this amount, Rs 43 crore will be spent on constructing a new Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium in Navelim, Rs 40 crore on new Sawalwada Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium in Pernem, Rs 35 crore for refurbishing swimming pool in Fatorda, Rs 25 crore for refurbishing Multi-purpose Indoor Stadium in Campal, Rs 20 crore on new tennis courts and cycling velodrome in Fatorda and Rs 15 crore each on new squash facility at Chicalim and on a hockey facility at Peddem Sports Complex.
The govt will also spend Rs 10 crore on temporary structures for rowing at Colvale, yachting at Dona Paula and beach volleyball at Miramar.
Ajgaonkar also informed that 5 consultants are on-board with the sports department for various projects to be undertaken for National Games. The five consultants already on-board are M/s Collage Design, M/s LKS India, M/s Escape Basat Consortium, M/s Navnirman Development Consultants (India) and M/s Construo Consultancy and Projects. Ajgaonkar said that more consultants will be engaged if the need be.
20 more sportspersons may
get govt assistance
PANAJI: Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Manohar ‘Babu’ Azgaonkar, has said 20 more sportspersons may start getting benefits under The Scheme of Financial Assistance from the government. Under this scheme, sportspersons of yesteryears in indigent (poor) circumstances get benefits from the government. Azgaonkar also informed that at the moment 37 sportspersons are availing benefit under this scheme.
As per data, 8 sportspersons of international level are availing Rs 8,000 benefit per month, 27 sportspersons of national level are availing Rs 5,000 per month benefit and another 2 sportspersons of state level are availing Rs 3,000 per month benefit. If the sports department finally gives its nod to giving assistance to 20 more sportspersons, the total number of sportspersons availing such benefits in the State will reach 57.
