All eyes, will on Wednesday be, on the motor vehicle inspectors who, if the assurances given by the government to the striking taxi operators are anything to go by, will to begin issuing fitness certificates even to those taxis without speed governors.

On Sunday when a delegation comprising around 10 core committee members of the two unions led by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at his official residence at Altinho, the State government agreed to offer temporary relief to the protesting taxi owners in the form of issuing fitness certificates, which were withheld pending the installation of speed governors, from January 24 onwards.

However, the taxi operators had threatened that if the assurance of granting fitness certificate was not fulfilled by Wednesday, they would resume the agitation.

“I still don’t have faith in the CM, who made 20,000 families suffer for three days,” Laxman Korgaokar one of the leaders of the agitation had said.

While it is believed that the taxi operators will be reluctant to resume their strike immediately in case the fitness certificates do not materialise, the situation is difficult to predict given that the operators buoyed by the recent “success” of their strike would not hesitate to hit the roads again.
