Margao ring road proposed for beautification

MARGAO

Margao’s ring road from the Aquem side of the Margao railway station to the Power House – which has become a favourite site for waste dumping and anti-social activity -- will get new lease of life with the local MLA Digambar Kamat proposing beautification of the stretch with footpaths and illumination.

Margao city roads around the Fatima convent school and the old bus stand will receive a fresh coat of hot-mix on Republic Day at a cost of Rs 2.2 crore. That’s not all. The long-pending beautification of the Aquem Power House traffic junction from Davorlim junction to Rawanfond junction will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 1.92 crore. Contractor Caetano Barbosa has bagged the tender and the file is being processed for expenditure sanction.

Speaking to the media after launching beautification works of the St Anthony Chapel, Aquem, on Tuesday morning, the Margao MLA said beautification work around the chapel will cost Rs 4.80 crore, adding that works will be carried out in consultation with the chapel committee.

On the ring road, Digambar said the file is being processed for the beautification of the ring road, from the KRC footbridge to the Power House junction. “The beautification works will include construction of footpaths, jogging track with proper illumination and provision for benches. This should hopefully dissuade people from dumping waste all along the ring road,” he said.

The Margao MLA further said that a proposal has been mooted to shift all the gaddas outside the KRC footbridge on one side of the road and take up widening of the stretch. “The existing culvert and nullah will be converted into a box-type culvert, which will pave way for the construction of a straight road so that taxis can come at the bay and pick up passengers,” he said.
