Renaming roads

There’s a lane in Margão, Bairro Povoação, which runs from the House of Elinio Colaço to the circle that leads to the New Market, named after “José Vicente Barbosa”. When some time ago, I asked Municipal Chairperson Dr Babita to rename it after the Goan music prodigy Chris Perry, she replied that since the road had an existing name, roads couldn’t just be renamed like that. When I told her that I could put forward a petition signed by hundreds, she asked me to desist from the idea. I find it quite outrageous that the Fatorda Road, running from Borkar Circle till the Mungul Junction has now been renamed as “Opinion Poll Street”. The stretch of the road was named after a Goan stalwart, the first Goan Bishop Dom Francisco Rebello, known for his intelligence and acumen that efficiently presided over the “transition” and did yeoman service as the Head of the Catholic Church. I would urge those who were instrumental in changing the name of this road to provide an explanation for the same and request them to rename this arterial road, as it was, after our late beloved Bishop.

Dr Francisco Colaço, Margao
