A Flying Squad from the South Goa Collector’s office stopped a controversial hill-cutting activity at Maimolem-Vasco on Wednesday evening.

According to sources, the hill cutting was going on for a long time without the knowledge of the Mormugao Municipal Council and PDA authorities and the site is right below the railway track used by trains departing from Vasco.

Acting on a complaint filed by Niz Goenkar Fauz spokesperson Chandrashekar Vasta, the Flying Squad rushed to the site.

Speaking to The Goan, Vasta said a massive hill cutting was going on in a dangerous manner right below the railway track, that could pose danger to lives of many people, especially the train passengers.

“The entire hill along with the railway track could collapse. I wonder what MMC is doing and how the local authorities are not aware of such a big development which involves JCB and movement of trucks to carry the stones from this site,” questioned Vasta.

The Flying Squad contacted the site owner, who said the site was in his property but he hadn’t sought permission as he was unaware of formalities for hill cutting. He however could not provide details of any papers and permission to the Flying Squad team.

An officer of the Flying Squad told The Goan that they rushed to the site after receiving a complaint from Vasta.

“We immediately stopped the work and we have also informed the local police station about the incident. We will seize the machineries, JCB and tipper and station it at Mormugao Police Station. We will soon send a show-cause notice to the owner,” said the officer of the Flying Squad.
