In a significant decision, Mapusa civic body’s Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee on Wednesday decided to review the movement of city buses within Mapusa and map out all the non-bus services in the city.
“We are looking at traffic management from the point of using existing services. The decision to review the movement of city buses is to look at the passenger index i.e. how many people use city bus services, how many trips are made and rationalisation of the fare,” said Roland Martins, convenor of GOACAN.
The Mapusa Municipal Council’s (MMC) Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee meeting was chaired by MMC Chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar in the presence of MMC’s road safety committee, chairman, Ratnapal Salkar, Mapusa Traffic PI, Tushar Vernekar and Roland Martins.
Speaking further, Martins said the city bus routes were not reviewed and strengthened for a long time.
“City bus routes and timings need to be got from the RTO and the information needs to be hosted on the municipal council’s website,” he said.
The MMC’s Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee has decided to map all non-bus services like motorcycle pilots, rickshaws, yellow and black and tourist taxis. Pay parking areas will also be recorded.
MMC, Chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar informed that the council has taken a series of steps to manage traffic entering the city.
“We have started developing various junctions in the city through CSR activity. Heavy vehicles have also been banned from entering the city limits from 7 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm,” Kavlekar said.
The chairperson, however, stressed the need to install traffic light blinkers at various entry points of the city.
Martins urged the civic body to explore other novel methods of road transport like cycling within the city.
Kavlekar informed that an agency had approached the civic body with a cycling proposal in Mapusa.
“We can offer cycling facility in low-lying areas in Mapusa. It will definitely click with the tourists,” Martins said.
