Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has warned tourist taxi operators of serious consequences if they indulge in violence on January 19, when they have called a state-wide strike. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event, Parrikar said, “No one can commit violence. If anyone commits violence, he will be taken to task.”
Parrikar continued, “If you (taxi operator) don’t want to ply your taxi, it’s your choice. But, if you commit violence, there are consequences, which you will face.”
When asked what those consequences can be, Parrikar replied, “The person (taxi operator) will be debarred from any government subsidy in future. Two, there will be criminal cases filed. Third, if the nature of the offence is serious, his own license will be jeopardized.”
Earlier in the day Parrikar also held a meeting with senior police officials and representatives of the tourism industry on the issue of taxi operators’ strike.
Savio Messias, president, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), was present during the meeting.
Messias said, “During the meeting, we gave a number of suggestions to deal with the situation on January 19, when taxi operators will go on a strike. We said that there should be one help desk each at North Goa, South Goa and Dabolim Airport. This desk will help in co-ordinating yellow and black taxis and buses for tourists.”
“Moreover, Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) will also be plying its buses to help tourists commute on January 19,”  he added.
