Govt flexes muscle, forms panel to keep check on Kankumbi site

The State Government has constituted four-member committee for keeping a strict vigil on the disputed canal site at Kankumbi. The committee has been asked to submit a weekly report of the visits to the site.  

The committee comprises of Superintending Engineer S D Patil, Executive Engineer Gopinath Desai, Assistant Engineer Suresh Babu and Assistant Engineer Dilip Naik.  

The order issued by Secretary for Water Resources P S Reddy has stated: “The Committee has been hereby constituted with immediate effect to monitor the situation and report if any activity is going on  at the disputed site on Mhadei at Kankumbi, Karnataka.”  

The committee shall visit the disputed site minimum once a week and if they notice any activity of construction etc the same shall be brought to the notice of the Government. Secondly, the committee has been asked to keep a close watch on newspaper reports for any activity relating to the Mhadei water diversion, construction and other related issues.  

Nonetheless, the committee shall visit the site as and when required in case of urgency besides briefing the legal team.  

“Whenever they visit the site, the committee shall take proper evidence of any activity going on at the disputed site and should put up a detailed note to the Government”, stated the order.
