The Directorate of Transport suspended 1,133 licenses in 2017 for six ‘everyday’ offences listed in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Interestingly, almost half the licenses suspended in 2017 were for the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs with 566 suspensions being affected for this offence. The use of mobile phone while operating a vehicle came in as a close second with 413 licenses being suspended in 2017.

As per the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court committee on road safety, the apex court in 2015 directed all Union Territories and States, to actively implement road safety laws and penalise the drivers by suspend their driving licenses for not less than three months. The offences were for over speeding, red light jumping, carrying persons in goods carriages, driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol & drugs and using mobile phone while driving a vehicle.

Overloading goods carriages has been included as the sixth offence in this list.
