Assumpta Convent High School, Sarzora blanked hosts Mount Mary’s High School, Chinchinim 2-0 to win the 3rd St Joseph Vaz Memorial Cup inter school football tournament at Church ground, Chinchinim on Tuesday.
Assumpta Convent High School controlled the tempo of the match and their attackline pressurised Mount Mary’s defence. The Assumpta Convent midfield intercepted and cancelled the opposition moves. At the other end, Mount Mary’s took time to settle down before they got into a rhythm.
Mount Mary’s High School were shaken in the 23rd minute when Assumpta Convent took the lead after striker Wayne Fernandes slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Assumpta Convent upped the ante and raided the rival goal and, a minute later, Chadel beat the rival goalkeeper with a stiff shot.
Post resumption, Mount Mary’s pressed hard for the goals but the rival defenders stood tall in protecting their citadel. Assumpta Convent held on to the 2-0 lead to win the title and pocket a prize of Rs 8,000 besides the winner’s trophy. Mount Mary’s High School had to settle for a prize of Rs 5,000 and
a trophy.
Elvis Gomes, president of Goa Football Association, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Dr Celso Fernandes and Jose Antonio Costa, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Hope Church, Chinchinim.
