Pilerne Sports Club registered a hard-fought 5-3 win over Nerul Sports Club in the tie-breaker to emerge champions of the 12th all-Goa Pio Jose Goveia Soccer Cup, organised by YSC Colvale, at Colvale church grounds, on Friday.
In a well-contested finals, witnessed by a large crowd; the regulation time ended in a 1-1 stalemate, before the winners were decided via tie-breaker. It was a disappointing day for the Nerul side that had made it to the finals for the third time but failed to lift the glittering trophy.
Nerul took an early 4th minute lead as Aniket Agarwadekar scored from the penalty spot. Chetan Dabolkar was brought down by Ryan Pereira prompting referee Nilesh Vaigankar to point to the penalty spot.
Just four minutes later Pilerne equalised through a well-executed free-kick by Royston Pereira which hit the upright and entered the goal. Nerul were unlucky not to score in the 32nd minute from a fierce strike by Sarvesh Dabolkar, which hit
the crossbar.
In the tie-breaker, Pilerne colts scored through Royston Pereira, Ryan Pereira, Rajat Chopdekar and Krupesh Bandodkar while for Nerul, Aniket Agarwadekar and Akash Banaulikar were on target.
Pilerne Sports Club bagged the winner's trophy and cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 while Nerul Sports Club received runners-up trophy and Rs 50,000.
YSC club officials Marcel Mendes (President), Dominic Pereira (Org. secretary), Philip D'Souza (treasurer) introduced Servo Fernandes (chief guest), Lavinio Rebello, Patrick D'Souza, Gajanan Kerkar, Raju Banaulikar, VP Colvale members to both the teams and match officials. Santan Ferrao welcomed the gathering while Dominic Pereira proposed the vote
of thanks.
