While residents in Canacona spar over cage fish culture claiming that fish feed is contaminating the Chapoli Dam water, Fisheries Minister Vinoda Paliencar clarified that rearing of fresh water fish has no harmful effect on humans.
Paliencar was responding to an unstarred question raised by Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes following recent public sentiments in Canacona that fish feed provided to fish cage culture in Chapoli dam is contaminating the dam water supplied through taps to residents in the taluka.
"The feed used for cage culture is a standard feed manufactured by Growel Feeds Pvt Ltd and is Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) certified," replied the minister to a pointed query by Fernandes.
On further query, minister again replied: "Feed has been certified as per Hazard Analyses and Critical Control Point (HACCP) by Export Inspection Council (EIC) Government of India."
It may recalled that following the introduction of cage fish culture in Chapoli dam, several residents began to complain of water contamination and after complaining to local authorities lodged protests with Paliencar and PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar.
, besides forcing local authorities to send water samples and fish feed samples for testing.
