Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday sought to point out that very few applications are received for the post of constables in Goa Police from the Catholic population of Goa.
"No Catholic youngsters from Salcete applied for the post of constable in Goa Police. Most applicants are from Sattari, Canacona, Pernem and Bicholim. As a result, its problematic to place these personnel in cities," CM lamented adding that the government can ensure geographical proximity in employment only if people apply for the posts.
The CM was responding to a question tabled
by St Cruz MLA Antonio Fernandes about the
reservation of jobs for Goans in industries.
"There is a condition of 80 per cent employment for Goans while giving approvals of Investment Promotion Board. Six to seven more such schemes will be formulated by the end of this year. But our youngsters do not like to work in private sector because job security and salaries are both low," he said.
The CM further explained that it is difficult to strike the right balance between job availability, availability of trained manpower and readiness to work hard among Goan youth.
"By positive discrimination we can regulate industries which employ Goans. We can give incentives. But we cannot do so by discriminatory reservation," Parrikar stated.
