Taxing time: All panchayats asked to collect garbage tax

With only a few panchayats collecting garbage in their respective areas, the State government has now directed all panchayats in the State to collect garbage tax from registered households in order to push ahead garbage collection and disposal in every village.
In a memorandum to block development officers in all talukas, Director of Panchayats Sandhya Kamat has drawn the attention of all panchayats to the Rural Garbage Disposal Scheme 2005 and Goa Panchayat (Grant of Financial Assistance to the Village Panchayats to deal with Plastic Garbage Menace) Scheme 2007.
Under the provisions, panchayats are expected to levy garbage tax, fees or service charges in accordance with the provision of the act.
"In this connection, all the village panchayats are hereby directed to impose garbage tax on every household, for collecting door-to-door segregated garbage which are registered for tax purpose within its jurisdiction," states the DoP memorandum.
