Panaji police station has taken a step toward digitisation through its newly installed biometric system for maintaining crime records with the intention of rendering time-bound services and reducing the paperwork.
The project costing around Rs 40,000 is financed by Faizal Khan chairman of Sanvordem-based Universal Alliance Group under CSR activity. The 28 year-old entrepreneur informed that the implementation of the entire project took a mere week following a comprehensive survey of the requirements.
The newly installed application has been designed to maintain digital records of each and every accused booked and arrested at the Panaji Town Police Station with the help of biometric unit and a webcam. This will also facilitate easy and quick access to the otherwise bulky records using just the fingerprints of the accused.
Most importantly, arrangements have been made to obtain digitised fingerprint data from the fingerprint unit of State Forensic Science Laboratory at Verna to maintain the previous records while updating the new ones.
The new equipment was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police (North) Chandan Choudhary in the presence of former Panaji MLA and chairman of Economic Development Council Siddharth Kuncalienkar and Panaji Police Inspector Siddhant Shirodkar.
"Panaji police has taken its first step towards the Smart City project. This prototype is 10 per cent of the work under the project wherein 500 to 600 CCTVs will be installed across the capital city," PI Shirodkar said.
