Anti-socials in the commercial capital taking shelter in the wild bushes along the Konkan railway track is not something new for the Margao police. That the miscreants commit crimes and run towards the railway tracks to take shelter in the bushes is not uncommon to hear in the corridors of the Margao police station.
Yet, wild bushes stand tall all along the railway tracks, right from Comba-Pedda-station with the Konkan Railway Corporation found wanting in clearing the open spaces along the tracks of the thick vegetation.
Police sources in the know pointed out that wild bushes and the thick vegetation comes in handy for the petty criminals to take shelter in times when police and members of the public are in a hot pursuit of the anti-socials. The absence of proper fencing all along the railway tracks has made things easy for the anti-socials to make good their escape towards the tracks under the cover of darkness.
In the past, the Margao police and the district authorities had dispatched SOS to the Konkan Railway authorities to clean up the open spaces of the bushes and vegetation. Take not, the Konkan Railway did comply with the dictates of the police and other authorities, by clearing the open spaces of the wild plants and vegetation, only to resurface after the monsoon.
When The Goan team took a round of the area along the tracks, especially along the Comba-Pedda line, both sides of the railway tracks were occupied by the wild vegetation and bushes, indicating that the railway authorities have still not got down to the annual ritual of clearing the open spaces of the vegetation.
When The Goan contacted Senior KR officer, Baban Ghatge to shed light on the delay in getting rid of the bushes along the railway tracks passing through the city, he said that the exercise will soon start, adding that directions have been issued to the concerned railway officials to clear the open spaces of the vegetation. "We are aware of the security and other problems thrown up by the thick vegetation and bushes along the railway tracks. Instructions have been issued to the concerned officials to start the exercise at the earliest," Ghatge added.
