Mormugao MLA and NRI Commissioner Milind Naik has questioned the presence of enclosures and partitions at a shed used for Sarvajanik Ganesh "Murgaoncha Raja" at Headland Sada, adding that the site was being used for anti-social activities.
Speaking to reporters, Naik said he had received many complaints about some anti-social activities in the shed after the nine-day Sarvajanik Ganesh festivities.
"I am a staunch believer of Lord Ganesh and I am not against Ganesh celebrations there, but I'd like to know why are thermocol decorations and partitions still there at the shed?"
"For any occasion, permission is sought to set up a pandal and after the event, the pandal has to be cleared immediately. Here, the shed is dark and covered by all sides despite Ganesh celebrations being over a long time ago," said Naik.
The deputy collector and chief officer of Mormugao Municipal Council should enquire as to why temporary Ganesh decorations still exist at the pandal."
"On the night of October 28, I witnessed 20-30 people creating a nuisance and having a party till 3 am in this pandal. I have directed Mormugao police to enquire in this matter."
"Several women staff of MPT are fearful of using the path after dusk due to the presence of anti-social elements at the shed. The shed will remain and I want to ensure that it is used by locals and citizens for a good cause, instead of being used for anti-social activities," he added.
The MLA said he had directed the police to increase patrolling and authorities were asked to install CCTV cameras around the area.
On the other hand, a group of residents from Headland Sada along with a few MMC Councillors had approached Dy Collector Mahadev Arondekar and MMC chief officer Agnelo Fernandes, after MMC inspected the temporary shed at Headland Sada junction.
The group said there could be a law and order situation if the shed used for religious functions was dismantled and structure was razed, adding that residents could protest on the streets if action is taken on allegations made by some section of society.
When contacted, Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar said his office had received complains that illegal activities were being carried out in the closed enclosures of the shed and he had written to the chief officer in this
connection.
Fernandes told The Goan that the proposed action of removing enclosures on November 1 had been deferred after he was requested to conduct further enquiry before going ahead with plans to remove partitions and enclosures at the shed.
