Big fee hike for govt-empanelled lawyers

Accepting the recommendations of the State Legal Services Authority, the government in a notification has decided increase advocates fees in various legal service committees in the State.

The new fees which reflect a steep hike from Rs 800 to Rs 10000 in some cases, shall be applicable to the advocates on the Panel of High Court Legal Services Committee, District Legal Services Authorities and Taluka Legal Services Committees.
The fees which are paid by the government to the empanelled lawyers are meant for those litigants who cannot afford to avail the services of the lawyers after fulfilling the guidelines.
While the earlier fee structure ranged between Rs 100 to maximum Rs 800, the new fee for writ petitions in High Court (Division Bench) is Rs 10,000 for each petition, Rs 6,000 for each writ petition before single bench. For writ appeal, letters appeal, patent appeals, advocate will now get paid Rs 10,000.
For civil appeal, the fees will be Rs 2,000, for civil reappeal Rs 4,000, for criminal appeal the fee will be Rs 10,000 while criminal reappeal will cost Rs 4000 according to the new fee structure.
For special criminal case in NDPS Courts, the fees for Commercial Quantity Cases will be Rs 10,000 while for Non-Commercial Quantity Cases and other cases it will be Rs 6,000. If there is anti corruption special case the advocate will get Rs 10,000 as fee and in
other cases fee will be Rs 6,000.
In case of atrocity in SC and STs cases, the fee will be Rs 4,000, civil suit fee will Rs 8,000, regular civil suit Rs 6,000, Motor accident claim petiton Rs 6,000. Taluka service Committee panel advocates will get Rs 8,000 for special civil suit, regular civil suit fee will be Rs 6,000, inventory proceedings will be Rs 4,000.
Earlier, the fee ranged between 50 to Rs 600.
