De-polluting the country

Synonymous with celebrations, the bursting of firecrackers across the country heralding joyous occasions and festivals continues to retain its charm in spite of the nuisance it has been causing. Hence the ban on sale of firecrackers in Delhi and National Capital Region by the SC will definitely dampen the spirits of the public who are accustomed to the deafening sound of firecrackers reverberating through the streets during the merriments. The absence of the majestic firework displays illuminating the Delhi sky will also deprive locals the festive feel that sets in many days ahead of the festival of lights. While many may see this as a regressive move, the fact that the SC order comes as part of an experimental move to gauge the effect of crackers on the alarming air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR needs to be welcomed. The decision will also however affect the livelihoods of lakhs of workers in Tamil Nadu's fireworks manufacturing hub of Sivakasi. But then if we are to live in a clean and uncontaminated ambience, such drastic steps need to be taken. Now, if the apex court could extend its reach to forbid the use of plastic it would be another prudent step towards de-polluting the country. Of course, old habits die hard. Just as it would be foolish to believe that the ban on crackers will ensure a smoke-free Diwali, prohibiting use of plastic will not produce instant results. But at least it would be a step in the right direction!
