Ponda journalist passes away

Noted journalist and sportsman Vasu Naik (49) of Warkhande-Ponda passed away on Saturday morning following a brief illness. Naik's eyes were donated as per his wish.

Naik suffered a cardiac arrest last week and was operated subsequently. He, however, breathed his last on Saturday at the Goa Medical College hospital while undergoing treatment.
He is survived by wife Vishakha, two daughters and son, and brothers Chandrakant Naik, Ashok Naik and Arun Naik.
Besides having a profound knowledge of Ponda taluka and having close contact with people across communities, Naik was also active in sports activities and had won many laurels in cricket. He was engaged with many sports club in Ponda taluka.
He began his journalism career in 1991 after graduation and was associated with many Marathi and English dailies in the State
Leaders and people from different walks of life paid their tributes to Vassu Naik and the final rites were performed on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has condoled the demise of the journalist.
In a statement, GUJ said, "Naik is remembered by his peers and colleagues as a committed as well as a fearless journalist who put the profession above all else."
"Colleagues recall his contributions over the years from Ponda taluka as being meticulous in his work as well as genuine in his encounters with others both in the profession and beyond."
The GUJ has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and his friends.
