Housing Board Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar said the tourism department will undertake beautification of Quedevelim and Nerul beaches in Bardez taluka. Salgaonkar was speaking after launching the work of construction of retaining wall at Quedevelim beach in the presence of Reis Magos Sarpanch Sheilesh Parulekar and panchas.
Later speaking to media persons, Salgaonkar said the stretch of beach from Quedevelim to Nerul is getting eroded every year due to onslaught of sea waves and construction of retaining wall has become necessary to stop the erosion and protect these beaches.
"The work of the 2-km retaining wall is being constructed by the Water Resource Department (WRD) by spending Rs 40 lakh. The work will be done in phases. The first phase will be of 400 metres long and after completion of this phase, construction of remaining portion will be undertaken," he informed.
The beautification of Quedevelim and Nerul beaches will be done by the tourism department.
"The tourism department has prepared estimates amounting to Rs 12 crore and submitted it to the government for approval. The project includes construction of changing rooms, toilets, erection of high masts, seating arrangement for tourists, appointment of beach cleaning staff, lifeguards, etc."
"Both these beaches were neglected for many years. If beautification of these beaches is done, then tourists will visit these beaches, which will in turn generate business opportunities for locals," he said.
Later, Salgaonkar launched the desilting work of 300 metres long nullah at Marra and construction of retention wall along the nullah. "This work is also being undertaken by WRD at an estimated cost of Rs 10 lakh," he added.
