An extra ordinary meeting of the Carmona Panchayat convened on Friday morning to discuss the contentious issue of Raheja and the Verda spa and resort had to be called off after four members abstained on grounds that the agenda was not discussed with them by the outgoing acting Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas.
Sarpanch Winston Dias, besides Panch members Allwyn George, Sandra Fernandes and another member did not turn up for the meeting. Outgoing acting Sarpanch Savita Macarenhas and two other members were present.
What's significant to note is that the meeting was called by the Acting Sarpanch Savita Masacrenhas before she handed over the charge to Sarpanch Winston Dias on September 19. The four members, including Sarpanch Winston, who abstained from the meeting, however, maintained that the Acting
Sarpanch did not discuss the meeting agenda with them before convening the meeting. Moreover, they pointed out that the Panchayat body meeting is scheduled on September 26 wherein the issues of Raheja and Verda spa and resort can be discussed.
After the meeting was cancelled, Savita told the media that the meeting had to be called off given that the four members did not turn up for the meeting.
"The four members have questioned why the agenda was not discussed with them before calling today's meeting", she said, adding that the members had refused to take the meeting notice on the plea the agenda was not discussed with them before calling the meeting.
When The Goan later contacted Sarpanch Winston Dias to shed light on the development, he said the meeting was called by the Acting Sarpanch before he assumed office and without discussing the agenda with the members. He, however, said the body meeting is scheduled on September 26 and the issues can be discussed at that meeing.
Panch members Allwyn George and Sandra Fernandes echoed similar sentiments. Allwyn said the agenda of the meeting was not discussed with the Panchayat members before issuing the notice. Also, when the body meeting is scheduled on September 26, there was no need for another meeting prior to that. All issues can be discussed and sorted out at the body meeting itself," Allwyn said.
