The ferry services were suspended and passengers were left stranded at Cortalim and Marcaim, as the car got stuck under the ferry boat.
The incident occurred at about 5 pm when Subhash Gawade (48) of Shimepayan-Mangeshi, Mardol, was returning from Cortalim to Mangeshi via the Marcaim ferry.
According to Gawade, he was the second-last person to move out of the ferry boat.
"I had done some shopping for Chaturthi at Verna and had taken this route to reach home early. The ferry boat moved a bit while I was reversing the car from the ferry. My car slipped and went straight into the water. Though I applied brakes, it didn't stop. However, I managed to escape from the window of the co-driver's side," he told The Goan.
Interestingly, another ferry boat which reached the spot with commuters stopped a few metres away from the ramp. Commuters got down into the water and managed to reach the road.
However, two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles were forced to return to Cortalim ferry wharf, informed locals. l Morajkar said they were searching the car with the help of a ‘location camera'. The Kundaim fire station was also engaged in search operations. The car was traced later at night. It may be recalled that Marcaim village had witnessed a tragedy four decades ago, when a canoe had sunk and many had perished in the incident.
