Tension prevailed at Valpoi Police Station late Tuesday evening, after Ponda MLA Ravi Naik was called for questioning and his vehicle detained by the police, following directions from the Returning Officer for the Valpoi by-poll.
According to sources, MLA Naik along with Congress leader Saifulla Khan and supporters were in the Valpoi market, when someone complained to Returning Officer Praveen Parab that they were allegedly distributing money at Valpoi bazaar.
Parab then directed the Valpoi Police to detain the vehicle and accordingly, police took the vehicle to the police station. Naik was also called to the police station for an enquiry.
Sources said the police was unable to initiate a legal enquiry as there was no official complaint from the returning officer till late Tuesday night.
Naik was furious on being summoned to the police station and confronted the police for detaining his vehicle without any complaint.
News that Naik was summoned for questioning spread quickly and a large number of Congress supporters rushed to the police station and alleged a conspiracy by their opponents.
Later at night, Arvind Pokle of Valpoi lodged a complaint stating that Naik was allegedly distributing money in Valpoi Bazaar.
When asked about the allegations, Naik rejected them outright and said he was busy making purchases in the bazaar.
Valpoi Police was yet to register a complaint against Naik as they had not received any formal complaint from the returning officer.
