The condition of the infant, who had ant bites on the body, is stated as stable, with doctors at the Hospicio hospital monitoring saying the child is responding to treatment.
The incident came to light on early Tuesday when a passer-by heard cries of a new born, just around 10 metres from the road at Fodgal. Taken aback by the presence of the child on a small mat, the man raised an alarm and tried to alert the neighbouring residents.
After the residents took custody of the child, they came to the conclusion that it has been delivered only a few minutes ago, they cleaned the child and headed to the Curtorim Primary Health Centre. After first aid and medication, the child was later shifted to the Hospicio hospital, where the child was housed in the neo-natal ICU for treatment.
Hospicio Medical Superintendent Dr Ira Almeida told The Goan that the baby boy had some ant bites, but hastened to add that the child was stable and responding to treatment.
Around noon, a police sniffer dog was pressed into service to help the Maina-Curtorim police obtain vital clues, but the dog just returned to the police vehicle from the spot.
Maina-Curtorim PSI Rohan Nageskar informed that the police has registered a case against unknown persons under section of the IPC and under section 8 of the Goa Children's Act.
Investigations are on.
Curtorim Panch member Simon Barretto and other residents had gathered at the spot, demanding that the authorities find out the culprits responsible for abandoning the new born baby boy along the roadside. "There are some migrant colonies around the area. The police and the panchayat can find out the culprits involved in the incident," Simon demanded.
