The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and Calangute panchayat on Monday shut down as many as ten restaurants in Calangute after their kitchens were found operating in unhygienic conditions following a joint raid by FDA officials and Calangute panchayat.
FDA food safety officer Abel Rodrigues, FDA officers Amit Mandrekar, Smruti Pirankar and Madhav Kavlekar led by senior officer Richard Noronha inspected 15 restaurants in Calangute and found the kitchens of 10 restaurants operating in unhygienic conditions.
The officials also found that the concerned restaurant owners did not have necessary permits and the FDA ordered a shut down of the restaurants.
Meanwhile, on Sunday night, Calangute Police and the FDA raided the premises of Simba Bar at Calangute and arrested the operator on charges of possessing narcotics. According to FDA officials, Calangute Police informed the FDA that the kitchen of Simba Bar was operating under unhygienic conditions. Acting on the information, FDA officials and a police team led by Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi raided the premises of the bar whereupon they found that the kitchen was dirty and the food prepared here was harmful to health.
Police also found 1.5 gms of narcotics in the premises. Calangute Police arrested the operator, Peter Awon, a Nigerian national, under the NDPS Act.
JMFC Mapusa then released accused Awon on bail.
FDA officials also served notice to close down the bar and sealed the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Calangute Police has requested the Calangute panchayat and Excise department to withdraw the license issued to the owner of Simba Bar at Calangute. Police also booked the bar owner under the NDPS Act for allegedly encouraging narcotics in the premises. The bar owner is reported to be absconding.
