Call it "monsoon blast" or "music festival", with more than half a dozen raves on Saturday, it was party time along the famous Vagator and Anjuna coast during the weekend.
Most clubs and bar and restaurants on the beachside had advertised in a big way trying to capitalize on the long weekend in the run up to the August 15 national holiday.
The Goan did a rece along the Anjuna coastal belt and found at least four banners announcing about the parties.
Hill Top Bar and Restaurant advertised a "Monsoon Blast" from August 11 to 15. Similarly, U V Bar offered "Freedom Freaks" from August 14 to 17, while Café Liliput announced "Idip n Dance Music Festival" from August 11 to 15. Nyex Beach offered "Blast after Blast" from August 15 to 17.
But that's not the story. Although late night music was played in more than half a dozen places on the coast, only three had got permission to play music till 10 pm.
"Keshav Palyekar, Hill Top and Waters took permission to play music from my office for three days. We can give permission to play music till 10 pm," said Gaurish Sankhwalkar, Deputy Collector, Bardez.
At many clubs, the party started on Friday evening and the non-stop music was played till wee hours of the morning.
The party would have continued as scheduled if not for the deaths of the two tourists and the subsequent political pressure.
As the media began to highlight the death of the two tourists due to suspected drug overdose on Sunday evening, the coastal belt of Anjuna fell silent after 9 pm onwards.
Sources in the police informed that a senior police official of the level of SP had rushed to Anjuna Police Station at around 9 pm on Sunday.
The owners of all the clubs and bar and restaurants along the coast were summoned to the police and told in no uncertain terms that the music must stop immediately.
"There was pin drop silence after 9 in the night on Sunday along the Vagator-Anjuna coast," a local from the village told The Goan.
Surprisingly, although the police are aware at which place the two tourists had attended the party on Saturday night, till late evening none of the owners were booked for any offence.
Anjuna PI Rahul Parab told The Goan that night party was going on at only two places which had permission. "Inquiry is going on. We have called the owners of the clubs and interrogated them," said Parab.
Early Monday morning, some four youngsters were arrested by the police with very small quantity of drugs.
The big question is only users are falling in the police net while the pushers are running free probably waiting for the next big party.
