1,200 runners register for Rotary’s Rain Run on July 30

Charity run to support free cancer detection camps for women

ONE thousand two hundred runners have registered for the ‘Rotary Rain Run 2017\' to be held on July 30 at the SAG Stadium, Bambolim. These include 400 runners from the armed forces based in Goa and 80 outstation runners.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Porvorim (RCP) for the third year in a row, the charity run has been organised to support free cancer detection camps conducted for underprivileged women by the RCP in Porvorim. Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa will be the chief guest at the prize distribution function, while Shri Rohan Khaunte, Revenue and IT minister will be the guest of honour and popular Bollywood actor-producer Sanjay Suri will be the brand ambassador.
RCP President Dilip Borkar who unveiled the Rotary Rain Run 2017 tee shirt at the media briefing held in Panaji on Tuesday evening said that the charity run is being organised for runners both male and female in the 5km, 10 km and 21 km ( Half Marathon ) categories. The top 3 runners in the men\'s, women\'s and armed forces categories of the Half Marathon will get prizes worth Rs 15,000, 10,000 and 5,000 respectively.
Rain Run coordinator Rotarian Avinash Parmar informed media persons that the run would be conducted from the Bambolim SAG stadium to Miramar via the Goa University road. This year both the 10km and 21km runs will be timed events. School children up to class X can register for the 5 km run for free. According to Parmar, the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) is supporting the event and Timing Technology India, a timing chip company is monitoring the timings of the runners.
Rotarian Shrivallabh, who also spoke on the occasion said the run this year was dedicated to women\'s health and education and the income generated from the run will go towards supporting the Women Health Centre in Porvorim, which has been set up by the RCP to conduct free cervical and breast cancer check-up camps for women from the under privileged sections of society.
According to Shrivallabh, the RCP had also installed a mammography machine at the RG Urology Hospital where breast cancer checks are conducted free of cost for under privileged women. Free Mammogram coupons, which are transferable will be issued to every participant.
Goa Kings are the main sponsors of the Rotary Rain Run, while Karp is the co-sponsor.
